From the Globe and Mail:
North American CEO group recommends Canada import temporary workers
Canada and Mexico should accelerate efforts to import temporary Mexican energy workers to alleviate the skills shortage in Alberta and other provinces as oil sands development ramps up, top North American CEOs will recommend today.
They will also call for Canada, the United States and Mexico to start work on harmonizing regulations and standards in three sectors: financial services, transportation, and food and agriculture, The Globe and Mail has learned.
The 30 chief executive officers make up the North American Competitiveness Council, formed last year to advise political leaders on strengthening economic ties between Canada, the United States and Mexico.
I am sure the interests of 'top CEOs' are quite similar whether they're from Mexico, Canada, or the U.S. But, what about the citizens of these countries? The people of Mexico leave their families...And, while they labour across the continent everyone can continue to turn a blind eye to how NAFTA has undermined Mexico's internal economy. Meanwhile, here in Alberta, we sit at the edge of ecological disaster as we waste water and pump out greenhouse gases to meet our oil commitments to the United States.
And, what does this mean for the Americans? Well, dead or alive, their celebrities are left exposed to endless scrutiny while we consume the misery of others.
I think most of us with would rather not trade our labour and our lands for Paris Hilton...thanks anyway.
